Raffles Town Plan Information Board
Raffles Town Plan
There are two main purposes of creating the town plan. Firstly, to separate the commercial from the residential areas and. All the shops were located at Commercial Square, near the river bank or trading port as it was much easier and faster for traders to bring goods from the trading port to the shops to be sold. Secondly, to have separate settlement areas for the three different races: Indian (Kampong Chulia), Malay (Kampong Glam) and Chinese (Chinatown). This allowed the three different races to not only interact among themselves, but also, set up their own shops and build religious places of worship.

Large Feather Bird

This three-dimensional sculpture entitled 'Bird' was designed by Botero. It is traditionally associated with peace and serenity, and also signifies the joy of living and the power of optimism. Botero’s sculpture allows one the pleasure of caressing reality. There is sensual complicity that the artist has with his creation which is shared with the public.
